Florence Haskin is the granddaughter of Samuel J. Haskin (founder of a settlement called "Mars"). She was only a child in the 1880's, when small pioneer communities dotted the landscape of northeast Nebraska. When a rail line was constructed between Sioux City, Iowa and O'Neill, Nebraska in 1890, a new town named "Savage" was born.
Soon, people began moving into Savage to be near the rails, and it appeared as if Mars might die. Florence's grandfather encourages the people of Mars to stay. After the death of Samuel Haskin in 1892, 14-year old Florence wonders if Mars can survive. Then three years of drought threaten to destroy her beloved settlement. In desperation, Florence's father takes his family to Missouri in search of a better life. In Missouri, Florence and her family find only hardship and death, and Florence is certain she will never see the hills of Mars again.
